Free Art For All in Greenbelt's Beltway Plaza

Greenbelt Business Alliance and The SPACE announce “Do Good Day”

The Greenbelt Business Alliance is partnering with The SPACE in its new, expanded location in Beltway Plaza, for a lunch hour of service and fun on Wednesday, May 17th from noon to 1:00

What is The SPACE?

In 2018, Shaymar Higgs opened The SPACE: Free Art For All, which stands for “Sharing Positive Artistic & Creative Energies,” as a three-week pop-up shop in Beltway Plaza, meant to provide free art experiences and social resources to the Greenbelt West community. Five years later, The SPACE has hosted over 12,000 individual art experiences and partnered with organizations such as the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), and professional artists of all creative mediums, as well as cultural enrichment activities. Along with creative experiences, The SPACE provides access to many social services and basic human needs.

How you can help

1. Bring Donations – For “Do Good Day,” Greenbelt Business Alliance members and community supporters like you can contribute to the SPACE mission by bringing in donations of new or lightly used clothes, blankets, pots, plates, and anything else you would typically donate to Goodwill or Salvation Army. The SPACE is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. You can also accept art, crafts, and office supplies for their day-to-day operations.

2. Put Together Art Kits – The SPACE will be tabling at local elementary and middle schools to reach an even broader base for those families who need assistance. Greenbelt Business Alliance members can help by putting together art kits for these school events.

Best of all, Greenbelt Business Alliance members will do some good within our community while meeting and working together with other entrepreneurs and community leaders.

For more information about The SPACE, see their most recent Annual Report and their Spring for the SPACE fundraising campaign. The SPACE has partnered with external organizations such as NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), The George Washington University, DC Wheels, and the City of Greenbelt.

IMPORTANT: If you plan on attending please send us a quick email at [email protected] so we can plan workstations and ensure there are plenty of refreshments.

Greenbelt City Work Session – Bring Your Own Bag Ordinance

Merchants are invited to a Work Session with Greenbelt City Council on March 8, 2023

Who? All Greenbelt Merchants
What? Council Work session
Why? Bring Your Own Bag Ordinance
Where? City Council Chambers – 25 Crescent Road
When? Wednesday, March 8, 2023
Time? 7:30 pm

The City Council will be working on a proposed ordinance to “Bring Your Own Bag” and wants input from the merchants:

This ordinance bans single-use plastic film carryout bags and requires retailers to charge at least 10-15 cents for paper carryout bags. The charge for paper bags reduces the demand for them and is an incentive to bring your own bag. The charge for paper bags helps the merchants to not incur that cost.

This ordinance covers all Greenbelt establishments selling goods in Greenbelt, including grocery stores, restaurants, department stores, and small businesses.

If merchants are not able to attend the Work Session next week, please advise them to forward their written comments to my email address ([email protected]), no later than March 8th 2023, by close of business.
